Students for Justice in Palestine at UC Berkeley is a group of students, faculty, and community members working together at the University of California, Berkeley, in solidarity with the struggle of the indigenous Palestinian people against apartheid and occupation. In addition to organizing protests, memorials, and other events that attempt to visualize the Palestinian struggle, we organize frequent educational events that give a voice to the Palestinian narrative as well as highlight the plight of the Palestinian people under Israeli aggression.

We are often asked what our vision for the future of Palestine and Israel is, as if we are entitled to decide on the precise shape and form of this future on behalf of those thousands of miles away. This question is a misunderstanding of our organization. We work in solidarity with, not on behalf of, Palestinians and Israelis who together continue to struggle against the apartheid regime that has consolidated itself in the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and 1967 Israel. It is not within our rights, then, to decide ourselves what that solution is, only to amplify those voices working against injustice. We like to say, though, that the future we would like to see in Palestine and Israel, we very much see already in ourselves: a diverse group of all backgrounds, Arab, Jewish, Palestinian, Israeli, and many others, coming together not based on our religious or ethnic identities, but rather in our agreement that we are working for a just cause. We are a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and community members at UC Berkeley, organized to promote justice, human rights, liberation and self-determination for the Palestinian people.

Statement of Guiding Principles

We believe that while the Palestinian people must ultimately be able to decide their future in Palestine, certain key principles, grounded in international law, human rights, and basic standards of justice will be fundamental to a just resolution of the plight of the Palestinians. These include:

  • an end to colonial systems of governance in the West Bank, Gaza, and Israel
  • the end of Israeli military occupation of the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem
  • recognition and implementation of the Right of Return for all Palestinian refugees and their descendants
  • an end to the Israeli system of apartheid and discrimination against the indigenous Palestinian population

Our dedication to the human rights of the Palestinian people is rooted in a fundamental respect for the human rights of all people. These include the right of all civilians, including Palestinians and Israelis, not to be the targets of violence. Just as we condemn the racism and discrimination underlying the policies and laws of the state of Israel, we reject any form of hatred or discrimination against any religious, racial, or ethnic group. Our great strength lies in the great diversity of our membership. We welcome individuals of all ethnic and religious backgrounds to join in solidarity with the struggle for justice for all in Palestine.

Code of Conduct

Our activities include educational events, demonstrations, civil disobedience, and a campaign demanding that the University of California divest from Israel. We will conduct only nonviolent actions. We reject actions that violate the guiding principles as stated above. Individual or groups acting as members, representatives, or sponsors of our organization agree to abide by the code of conduct and to endorse the principles of our organization. We may elect to endorse any programs or actions of other groups whose principles and code of conduct are consistent with those of SJP.
